Still Need Health Insurance? Special Enrollment Periods & More

Did you tie the knot? Did you welcome a baby to your family? Congratulations!

Your life is changing in so many amazing ways, and with a growing to-do list, it can be hard to keep up with everything. If you are still in need of health insurance or your needs have changed, you might be in luck. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides that, in certain specific circumstances, you can still purchase qualifying major medical insurance.

Getting married, having a baby or even losing other coverage are all referred to in the insurance industry as “qualifying life events.” Certain qualifying life events might make you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period, which means that you can potentially enroll for a plan outside of the Open Enrollment Period.

In fact, if you’re trying to access insurance for a child, in many cases you can actually apply year-round for coverage that will start immediately.

A few of these circumstances include the following:

  • Loss of employer benefits
  • Moving
  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Loss of coverage in the past 60 days (or anticipating losing coverage in the next 60 days)
  • Birth of a child
  • Change in income
  • Release from incarceration

Any of these can make you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period, which is essentially a window for you to get coverage either on or off the healthcare marketplace exchange.

But what if none of these apply, and you still need at least some coverage?

Latorre Insurance is here to help. In addition to on and off exchange qualifying coverage, we offer plans that can cover short periods of time (typically 30 days to 11 months) and that provide coverage similar to major medical. Although these plans do not provide all of the Essential Health Benefits of ACA plans, they do offer coverage in the event it’s needed. These plans do have coverage restrictions, which might include a lack of coverage for pre-existing conditions.

Additionally, please ask about our supplemental coverage offerings. These plans can offer great financial help in the event of a serious illness or injury. Speak to a Latorre Insurance professional today.

*These plans do not qualify as Essential Health Coverage. Therefore you may still be subject to tax penalties for a lack of qualifying coverage.
