Group insurance is exactly what it sounds like: insurance coverage for a group of people. Typically offered in a benefits package, group insurance is especially useful for companies, as well as professional groups and societies. Because the cost of group insurance is usually much less than purchasing multiple individual policies, group insurance is as affordable as it is beneficial.

The two primary requirements for group insurance eligibility are as follows:

  1. It must be a group of people tied to a common organization.
  2. There must be a Master Policy Holder.

The Master Policy Holder is the individual in charge of managing and maintaining the contract. In the case of a company, for instance, the Master Policy Holder will normally be the employer. For other groups and societies, this individual will be someone with a vested interest in their organization and in the individuals of their organization. This individual must also ensure that all members receive their insurance certification, detailing their policy, terms, claims process, and premium.

Insurance coverage is often determined based on an individual’s risk. For group insurance, however, the coverage is the same for all individuals of the group. Individuals will be entitled to this coverage until their departure of the company or group or in the event that the group insurance policy is not renewed by the Master Policy Holder.
