SEP for Tax Season: What You Need to Know

First and foremost, as it refers to health insurance and for the purpose of this blog, we will be using the acronym SEP to refer to this Special Enrollment Period.

As some of you may have heard, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have announced an SEP for eligible consumers, allowing them to enroll in health insurance through April 30th. Here’s what you need to know:

  • This SEP will allow eligible consumers to enroll from March 15th through 11:59 pm E.S.T. April 30th.
  • Some individuals were unaware/did not understand the fee for not enrolling, and this SEP provides them an opportunity to purchase health insurance.
  • Eligible consumers include those who 1) are not enrolled in coverage for 2015, 2) attest that when they filed their 2014 tax return they paid the fee for not having health coverage in 2014, and/or 3) attest that they did not become aware of the fee until after Open Enrollment ended/while preparing their 2014 taxes.

To find out if you are eligible for this SEP, and to learn more, please contact our offices immediately.
