Insurance in the News: Louisville QB Gets $10 Million in Insurance

With the emergence of PPACA, insurance has been a hot topic in this year’s news.  Also making the news, though, is the $10 million insurance policy obtained by Teddy Bridgewater, quarterback of the Louisville Cardinals.  According to this article from USA Today, this  is well above the approved amount listed in NCAA’s official insurance plan, also called the “Exceptional Student-Athlete Disability Insurance Program.”

Through the NCAA, qualified student-athletes can acquire insurance, with many receiving plans that are as high as $5 million.  Bridgewater, however, obtained his insurance policy outside of the NCAA, with the approval of the NCAA.

The article goes on to say the following:

“The process of obtaining an insurance policy is fairly simple. There are a variety of different companies licensed by the NCAA to work qualified student-athletes, groups that offer different policies, plans and values. Once a company is approved by the NCAA, a student-athlete can choose the company he or she feels can provide the highest quality of coverage.”
