The Best Tip for Driving On Icy Roads Is…

Brr! It’s a cold day here in North Carolina. Although many of you were given the day off of work and school, allowing you to stay off the icy roads, many others were forced to commute for one reason or another. Although much of the ice is starting to melt, the temperatures around here are dropping again tonight, which means, you guessed it, more freezing temps and more dangerous driving conditions.

Before you get behind the wheel, here are some things to remember about driving in icy conditions:

1. Wait it out.

Work and other obligations are important, but your safety and the safety of those around you is more important than anything else. When in doubt, wait it out, and don’t try to drive until conditions have improved.

2. Drive slowly.

When it comes to icy roads, just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Don’t be afraid to drive below the speed limit to avoid slipping on ice and losing control of your vehicle.

3. Wear a seatbelt!

You should always wear your seatbelt, but when it comes to icy roads, even a minor accident could be fatal.

4. Brake lightly.

Just as you should avoid quick accelerations in icy conditions, be sure to also avoid sudden stops. Be soft on the brakes, as braking too hard can lead to spinning out and losing control of your vehicle.

But, of course, the best tip for driving on ice is to….

5. Stay off the roads.

The best way to avoid an accident in icy conditions is to avoid driving altogether. (Yes, we know we said this in point #1, but it is really that important!) Stay off the roads until the ice has cleared and driving conditions have improved.

Stay warm, friends, and most importantly, stay safe.
