4 Ways Weather Can Affect Your Business

Hurricane Joaquin might not be making landfall in the Carolinas, but we’re still expected to get up to 15 inches of rain.

First and foremost, we cannot reiterate enough how important it is to avoid the roads in these kinds of conditions. Flooding can be incredibly dangerous, both in car and on foot, so be sure to use your best judgment before leaving the house. (Besides, a Saturday spent hunkered in, watching movies and drinking hot cocoa with the family sounds kind of nice, doesn’t it?)

We aren’t here to discuss safety, however. What we actually want to talk about is the weather’s effects on your business. Particularly for our business insurance clients, it’s important to be aware how significant weather, like what we’re expected to receive this weekend, can impact your business. After all, the better prepared you are, the better you’ll be able to “weather the storm”, so to speak, even after the dark clouds have gone away.

1. Fewer customers. If it’s raining, or there’s inclement weather of any kind, customers are more likely to stay in. You might notice some businesses offering extreme sales as weather worsens. In spite of this, many customers are more likely to overlook the appeal of discounts in favor of staying home.
2. Price fluctuations. This is especially true for those who work in the food industry. Raw materials in particular can skyrocket in price during periods of extreme weather. Although weather is often unpredictable, by preparing in advance to the best of your ability, you’ll be better able to manage your financial projections.
3. Weather delays. Although weather delays or closings might mean less business, it also means that your employees are safe. In our minds, delays and closings are a no-brainer when it comes to employee and customer safety.
4. Property damage. Extreme rain and wind can lead to fallen power lines and water damage. Although you have no control over these things, you can ensure that your property is properly protected. The better prepared, and covered, you are, the better you’ll be.

And lastly, we know we said we weren’t here to talk about safety, but we just want to say again: Play it smart this weekend. If the roads are unsafe, avoid them. Have a wonderful weekend—stay dry!
