Delivery Driver Safety Tips

In comparison to your fellow employees taking orders and preparing the food, you as a delivery driver have a much higher risk of accidents and injuries. And as exciting as this job can be, cars can also be incredibly dangerous for drivers who are irresponsible, unprepared, or uninformed.

Here are four important tips to keep in mind while behind the wheel.

1.    Be aware of your surroundings.

Pay attention to where you are, as well as everything around you.  Be aware of pedestrians on the sidewalk, cars ahead that are putting on their brake lights, and any potential obstructions in the road.  A smooth reaction is dependent on a keen eye and a listening ear.  Be sure to pay attention to the sounds occurring around you, including police and fire sirens, which will require you to move.

2.    Stay focused.

Similar to being aware, being focused requires active eyes and ears.  Do not drive while tired, listen to music too loudly, or behave in any way that could distract you from your focus.

3.    Do not drink and drive.

Even if you’ve “only” had one drink, it is NEVER okay to drink and drive.  Not only is it illegal, but it could also be fatal or injurious to you, as well as those around you.

4.    Do not text and drive.

Nothing is important enough to take your eyes away from the road.  Severe, deadly accidents can happen in the matter of time it takes for you to look down at your phone and back up at the road.  Cars slam on brakes, people run out into the road, and the results are fatal but avoidable if you don’t text. The message can wait.  And, if not, find a safe place to pull over, park, and respond.

In the unfortunate event of an accident, your points of contact, in order, are as follows:

  1. Medical assistance
  2. Police
  3. Employer
