Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Thanksgiving is a day for great food and for quality family time – but it’s also known to have the highest number of cooking-related fire claims.

Here are a few tips to avoid such disaster and enjoy your Thanksgiving with your family and not the fire department:

Are you deep-frying your turkey? If so, be sure to cook outdoors at a safe distance from any shrubbery and buildings. Over a third of fires started from a fryer start in a garage or on a patio. When adding your turkey to the fryer, shut off the fuel to prevent a flare-up in case oil splashes out.

Do not leave the fryer unattended! Unattended cooking can be very dangerous, so be prepared and aware when you are cooking.

Be sure to keep an extinguisher nearby. Whether you are outside or in the kitchen, always be alert, and keep anything flammable away from the stove.

Check the turkey’s temperature. Never put anything on the table that you think might be undercooked or spoiled.

Be aware of those who might be drinking. Know who the designated drivers are ahead of time!

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that you and your family have a fun, and safe, Thanksgiving.
