Choosing a Home Security System

A little over a week ago, a friend of mine was sleeping in the living room of his apartment. He’d fallen asleep watching his new favorite television series and had stayed on the couch for the remainder of the night. At around 5 a.m., something–a sound or a sudden movement, he wasn’t sure–woke him up. As he opened his eyes, he became very aware that someone else was in the room with him, jolted to his feet, and saw the silhouette of a complete stranger standing in the doorway. Clearly not expecting to see someone sleeping in the living room, the intruder abruptly turned around and ran away and had disappeared before my friend could reach him.

Clearly, my friend made a few mistakes of his own in this scenario, like forgetting to lock his door, but it was a not-so friendly reminder to him just how important home security is.

You lock your doors at night, but have you ever thought about taking home protection a step farther with a home security system? A home security system can keep your home safe, oftentimes deterring intruders by their mere presence. Most systems will even alert the authorities of a break-in, in addition to sounding a loud alarm.

In a recent article, the Better Business Bureau issued a warning to consumers about door-to-door vendors selling alarm systems who use high-pressure sales tactics. Like with any other investment, it’s important to choose a reputable security company before purchasing your system.

Here are some tips:

  • Research the company to ensure that they are a reputable provider with the proper licensing.
  • When you select a company and receive a contract, be sure to read it thoroughly. It’s important that you understand your rights, prices, the refund policy, cancellation procedures, etc.
  • Compare systems. By comparing systems and rates of multiple companies, you’ll be able to select the best company for you more easily.
