May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells and is caused by too much exposure to sunlight. It’s a disease that affects millions every year. Although with diagnosis and proper care, skin cancer can be properly treated, this is a very serious disease.

Out of all patients diagnosed with cancer, skin cancer accounts for nearly half; this includes breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer. Perhaps even more alarming is that nearly 20% of Americans will experience some type of skin cancer in their life.

Here are some tips to help prevent skin cancer:

1. Do NOT tan.
2. Stay in the shade during 10am and 4pm. The sun’s rays are the strongest during these times.
3. Make sure to keep sunscreen on, and reapply it approximately every two hours.
4. Wear protective clothing (ex. sunglasses, hats, long sleeve shirts, pants, etc.).
5. Avoid long exposure to sunlight.
6. Wear lip balm to prevent your lips from the UV rays, and make sure to reapply every two hours.
